Automated drip irrigation enhances fertilizer use efficiency. Water and fertilizer are delivered directly to the root zone, ensuring a reliable supply of nutrients and rapid root uptake. The uniform distribution of the nutrient solution in the soil promotes highly even nutrient placement, thereby improving root absorption efficiency. In microirrigation, because the wetted area is confined to the region where roots are concentrated and the nutrient solution is distributed as uniformly as possible, fertilization efficiency is significantly increased. Moreover, the low flow rate of microirrigation prolongs the time available for crop nutrient uptake.

Under automated drip irrigation, nutrient-rich water drips slowly into the soil, and irrigation is immediately halted once the root-zone soil reaches saturation. This approach significantly reduces the leaching of nutrients—particularly nitrate nitrogen—into deeper soil layers. Traditionally, fertilization and irrigation were carried out separately; after fertilizer was applied to the soil, insufficient or untimely irrigation often resulted in the fertilizer remaining in the soil without being fully taken up by the root system. In contrast, automated drip irrigation can bring the soil to full saturation, yet the duration of each irrigation event is brief, limiting the time available for root uptake. When tomatoes are grown using a field-based drip fertigation system, nitrogen use efficiency can reach 90%, phosphorus use efficiency 70%, and potassium use efficiency 95%. Higher fertilizer-use efficiency translates into reduced application rates, thereby lowering fertilizer costs.
