Microirrigation is short for micro-water irrigation. It involves using microirrigation system equipment to deliver water to crops according to their water requirements, via a low-pressure pipeline network and specially designed emitters installed at the end (on the terminal pipe).
Microirrigation, short for micro-water irrigation, is an irrigation method that uses a microirrigation system to deliver water and essential nutrients to the soil surface or subsurface near crop roots at low flow rates and with high spatial and temporal uniformity and accuracy. This is achieved by employing low-pressure pipeline networks and specially designed emitters—such as drip emitters, micro-sprinklers, seepage irrigation pipes, and microtubes—installed at the terminal (downstream) sections of the piping system. The system is designed to meet the specific water requirements of crops, ensuring that the soil around the root zone is consistently maintained in an optimal condition with respect to moisture, fertility, and aeration, thereby supporting healthy crop growth and development. Key characteristics of microirrigation include small application rates, long-duration irrigation events with short intervals, relatively low operating pressures, precise control over water application volumes, and direct delivery of water and nutrients to the soil immediately adjacent to the crop roots.
