In agricultural production, water resources are the foundation for crop growth. China’s agricultural water consumption amounts to 360 billion cubic meters, while the country’s total water consumption is only 550 billion cubic meters, meaning that agriculture accounts for nearly two-thirds of the national water use. Therefore, ensuring water-efficient farming is not only a major challenge facing Chinese agriculture but also an urgent priority for safeguarding sustainable environmental development.
A fertigation unit is an automated irrigation and fertilization system, representing the next evolution of smart irrigation—and an upgraded version of drip irrigation. As we all know, drip irrigation was first pioneered in Israel, where its efficient application enabled the country to transform a vast desert into an agricultural powerhouse. Following Israel’s success with drip irrigation, the technology was swiftly adopted and emulated by countries around the world.
The integrated water–fertilizer machine enables automated irrigation and fertilization. The system controls irrigation based on soil moisture, using soil moisture sensors to continuously monitor soil water content in real time. This data is transmitted instantly to the machine’s control system; when soil moisture falls below the set threshold, the system automatically activates the irrigation system to supply water to the crops, and when soil moisture reaches the target level, the system promptly shuts off the irrigation. By relying on empirical data, this approach makes irrigation and fertilization in crop production more efficient and well-balanced, while also achieving significant water savings.
The primary purpose of using a fertigation system for irrigation is to enhance irrigation efficiency in crop production. In traditional farming, the water-use efficiency of agricultural irrigation is only about 45%; however, with intelligent fertigation, water-use efficiency can exceed 90%, significantly reducing irrigation water consumption.

Fertilization is precisely controlled by sensors: soil N-P-K sensors provide real-time monitoring of soil nutrient levels. When the sensor detects that soil nutrient concentrations fall below the target threshold, the fertilization system automatically activates; once the nutrients reach the desired level, the system shuts off automatically.
China’s water resources are inherently scarce, and their distribution is highly uneven. In recent years, driven by economic development and the overexploitation of natural resources, water supplies have been steadily declining. Many regions that were once well-endowed with water are now facing growing water shortages. The emergence of integrated water–fertilizer machines offers an effective solution to the shortcomings of agricultural irrigation in China; widespread adoption of this technology would significantly alleviate the pressure on agricultural water use and play a crucial role in promoting sustainable environmental protection.
