Greenhouse drip irrigation : As agricultural modernization advances, an increasing number of farmers are turning to greenhouse vegetable cultivation. Greenhouse drip irrigation is a critical technological infrastructure that underpins high-quality, high-yield production of greenhouse vegetables. In addition to its advantages of water and energy conservation and reduced humidity, greenhouse drip irrigation also helps regulate the microclimate within the field, thereby improving the crop-growing environment; when combined with topdressing, it enables simultaneous application of water and fertilizer, achieving integrated water–fertilizer management.

1. Greenhouse drip irrigation It is a semi-automatic mechanical irrigation method that delivers water directly to the vicinity of crop roots through pipelines, with drip irrigation applied as needed via emitters to slowly seep into the soil. This approach not only meets the water requirements for vegetable growth but also avoids lowering soil temperature due to irrigation. Drip irrigation involves precise, slow-water application, preventing soil compaction and ensuring good aeration. It helps maintain optimal moisture, nutrient, and air conditions for vegetable root systems, while simultaneously reducing humidity inside the greenhouse, thereby decreasing the incidence of vegetable diseases. Moreover, it significantly minimizes water loss through seepage and evaporation, conserving water while still meeting the needs of vegetable growth. As a result, vegetable yields are high and quality is excellent; after implementing drip irrigation in greenhouses, labor-intensive cultivation practices can be eliminated, leading to substantial savings in both time and effort.
2. The irrigation cycle for drip irrigation systems and greenhouse vegetables is generally four days. Drip irrigation in greenhouses requires a pressure of 1 to 1.5 kilograms per square centimeter, which can be achieved either by using a water pump or by drawing water from a nearby water tower. The water tower should be at least 10 meters high to ensure adequate pressure. The installation elevation of the drip irrigation tubing should be determined based on the water pressure and the area to be irrigated.
3. Maintenance and Repair: To ensure smooth water flow, the filter should be cleaned regularly. Uneven dripping refers to an imbalance in drip irrigation along the drip tape at both ends of the greenhouse, typically manifesting as heavy dripping near the water source and insufficient dripping farther from it, primarily due to inadequate water pressure or improper installation of the lateral pipes. In such cases, it is necessary to increase the water supply pressure and adjust the slope of the lateral pipes.
4. Enhancing economic efficiency and boosting both output and productivity: the application of drip irrigation in greenhouses can significantly improve product quality by reducing the use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides, as well as lowering the incidence of diseases and pests. In summary, compared with traditional flood irrigation, drip irrigation in protected horticulture—such as greenhouses and polytunnels—can substantially increase crop yields, enable earlier market entry, and reduce costs associated with water, fertilizer, pesticide application, and labor. Consequently, it delivers substantial economic and social benefits. Drip irrigation technology for horticulture aligns with the modern agricultural goals of high yield and superior quality, which is the fundamental reason for its existence and widespread adoption.
Greenhouse drip irrigation The application of this technology in greenhouses in northern China has demonstrated remarkably positive results. It offers numerous advantages, including low capital investment, labor savings, time efficiency, reduced physical effort, and increased yields. Moreover, it effectively conserves water and enhances both the quality of greenhouse-grown vegetables and overall economic returns. This technology is particularly well-suited for the development of vegetable production bases in northern China, serving as an effective measure to promote adjustments in agricultural cropping structures and substantially improve economic, social, and ecological benefits. As such, it holds tremendous potential for widespread adoption and dissemination.
