Irrigation PE pipe installation is currently a popular application. However, many people still lack a clear understanding of its functions and characteristics. First, it is important to recognize that irrigation PE pipes have lower hardness and poorer rigidity compared with metal pipes. During transportation and installation, comprehensive protective measures must be taken to prevent damage caused by improper external forces or handling equipment. After concealed installation, the pipeline location should be clearly marked to avoid accidental damage during subsequent renovation work. Therefore, during installation, in addition to mechanical connection methods such as threaded inserts or flanges for joining with metal pipes or water heaters, hot-melt connections should also be used for other applications to ensure the pipeline remains intact and free of leakage points. Furthermore, irrigation PE pipes exhibit brittle behavior at temperatures below 5°C; thus, winter construction operations require careful precautions, and sharp tools should be used to cut the pipe slowly. Pressing or striking installed pipes is strictly prohibited. Where necessary, sections susceptible to external forces should be protected with appropriate covering materials. Another key consideration is the material’s high coefficient of linear thermal expansion: when the pipe is exposed or buried, technical measures must be implemented to prevent thermal expansion and deformation. Irrigation PE pipes are also prone to long-term aging and degradation under ultraviolet radiation; therefore, when installed outdoors or in direct sunlight, they should be coated with a dark-colored protective layer. Upon completion of installation, a hydrostatic pressure test must be conducted before sealing the pipeline and applying the final decorative finish. For cold-water pipelines, the hydrostatic test pressure shall be 1.5 times the system pressure, but not less than 1 MPa.
In practice, prior to connecting irrigation PE pipes, fittings, pipes, and ancillary equipment must be thoroughly inspected in accordance with design requirements and subjected to a visual inspection on site to verify compliance before they can be put into service. During such inspections, it is recommended to assess the external surface quality, pressure rating, mating accuracy, and material consistency. In addition, for pipes joined by fusion welding, only fittings and pipes of the same manufacturer should be used; pipes with similar performance characteristics must first undergo testing, and may only be used if they pass. The appropriate dedicated heating tools must be employed according to the specific type of connection, and open-flame heating of fittings or pipes is strictly prohibited. Another important consideration is to keep the pipe ends clean during connection and to temporarily seal the pipe openings after each work session to prevent foreign matter from entering the pipes and compromising their performance. Furthermore, when performing connections in cold weather (below −5°C) or under strong wind conditions, appropriate protective measures should be implemented or the connection procedure adjusted to shield the pipe ends from wind, rain, and sand, thereby preventing damage to the pipes.
In short, if you have any questions about the precautions for installing irrigation PE pipes, you can come here for advice. After reading this article, you’ll know exactly which aspects to consider when making your selection should you encounter such a situation. We hope it proves helpful to you.
