Micro-sprinkler flow rate refers to the volume of water discharged through the nozzle per unit time; due to its relatively small magnitude, liters per hour (L/h) is commonly used as the unit. Under standard pressure—i.e., the design pressure—the water discharge of a micro-sprinkler is termed its design flow rate. When the flow rate is excessively high, in order to maintain optimal spray characteristics, it is necessary to increase the operating pressure of the sprinkler, which in turn enlarges the spray diameter. As a localized irrigation technique, this approach exceeds the irrigation requirements of most crops and thereby undermines the very advantages that micro-sprinkler irrigation is intended to provide.
Hanging Micro Sprinkler There are two types: misting and water-spraying. The misting type features refractive atomization with a spray radius of 1.5–2 meters and a water output of 40 L/h; the cross-shaped micro-misting nozzle has a radius of 1 meter and a water output of 30 L/h. The square fine-mist nozzle has a radius of 2.5–3 meters and a water output of 60–80 L/h, making it suitable for mushrooms, wood ear fungi, and similar crops, as it provides a cooling mist effect and is widely used. The water-spraying type also comes in two varieties: dual-side rotary micro-sprinklers with a spray radius of 2.5–3 meters and a water output of 60–80 L/h, and large square rotary sprinklers with a spray radius of 3.5–4 meters and a water output of 100–120 L/h. These are ideal for greenhouse vegetable cultivation, delivering ample water volume with no dead zones in the spray pattern.
Micro-sprinklers can produce a wide variety of spray patterns, including full-circle, fan-shaped, strip-shaped, and radial jet patterns. Atomizing nozzles, by contrast, do not have a fixed spray pattern. For micro-sprinklers that deliver full-circle or fan-shaped sprays, the spray diameter is commonly used as one of the key parameters for evaluating spray performance. For micro-sprinklers operating at the same flow rate, it is evident that the larger the spray diameter, the lower the spray intensity.
Characteristics of suspended micro-sprinklers:
1. During inversion, a suspension weight keeps the spray nozzle oriented vertically downward, preventing any change in the nozzle’s direction.
2. Rapid water flow to prevent clogging. Fine, evenly distributed water droplets.
3. Equipped with a drip-proof valve to prevent dripping during system opening and closing.
The suspended micro-sprinklers are controlled by valves, with the water supply pressure maintained at a working pressure of 0.18 MPa. Micro-sprinkler irrigation is typically scheduled for the morning or afternoon, as irrigation during these times allows soil temperature to rise rapidly. The duration and frequency of watering can be adjusted according to the crop’s growth stage and its water requirements. Measurements have shown that during the high-temperature season, a 20-minute micro-irrigation session can reduce air temperature by 6–8°C. Because the micro-sprinkler water is applied directly to the leaf surface, it is readily absorbed, which helps prevent the spread of pests and diseases while promoting healthy crop growth.
